Kaylene Graber, 3rd grade teacher at McClelland Elementary, has used some of Google’s interactive features to allow students opportunities to engage and collaborate with each other and with the lesson. Students have multiple ways they could respond as well as show their thinking. This is a great tool that can take the place of paper pencil activities and allow students to manipulate tools in new and engaging ways.

Kaylene sees the use of these tools as supplementary and “intertwined” rather than using them separately. Kaylene says, “Google forms are great for escape rooms and assessments, slides are very similar to jamboards without the use of the stylus, but are great for writing, interactive slides, etc.” Each of the tools and activities build off of each other and have their own individual, but intentional, purpose in the flow of the lesson and the unit of study. Whether learning from home or in person, these interactive tools are engaging for students in all educational settings.

Not only are the tools and Kaylene’s uses enjoyable from a student’s perspective, the teacher can also rely on them as artifacts of student learning and thinking as ongoing assessment tools throughout the units.
