“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” -Malala Yousafzai, I Am Malala
This quote is a reflection of the work being done at Maplewood for each child to see themselves represented in books. When a child can see themselves, they feel a sense of importance all kids need in order to grow.
As a staff, it has become a mission to introduce a diverse collection of books to the students. Many teachers have taken on the task of writing grants to increase the diversity in their classroom libraries. Most recently the administrators decided to introduce a digital option.
Mrs. Moore, Maplewood Interim Principal, created a Maplewood Flipgrid. This flipgrid has become a place for staff members to read a variety of books that will demonstrate the diversity in the Maplewood classrooms. Teachers have been sharing read alouds covering a variety of topics hoping to reach each child in the school.
The Maplewood staff and students will have access to this flipgrid. Teachers will be able to share the stories with the class as well as provide students with the opportunity to listen to stories whenever they want. This will increase the diverse literature in every classroom at Maplewood. A great example of working together to reach each and every child!
