Kristin Lathrop is a 4th grade teacher at Stout Field Elementary. While her class has been virtual, Miss Lathrop has been engaging her students and maintaining normalcy through the use of Book Clubs. Students were so excited to start reading together that they picked up their copies from school in record time!

During their first Book Club rotation, students were reading one of three different novels: The Hero Two Doors Down, Cricket in Times Square, and Frindle. Groups met together on their assigned days to read using a variety of strategies. Students had, at different times, the opportunity to listen to a read aloud, participate in a shared read, and use breakout rooms to partner read. Students particularly enjoyed partner reading, as breakout rooms allowed them to connect and share much like they would while reading a novel in the classroom. Miss Lathrop was also able to build on student understanding of the text by incorporating non-fiction videos, such as a tour of New York City or a biography of Jackie Robinson. To review sections of the text, students played Kahoot! or checked in on a Google Form.

Students are now on their second Book Club rotation. All students are reading Bridge to Terabithia, which was picked up just as fast as their first novels. Students are eager to continue exploring this text together as they transition back to in-person learning.
