Jessica Green is the secondary THRIVE teacher at Sanders. The curriculum THRIVE uses comes from Unique Learning Systems (ULS) and includes their full curriculum for students on the Certificate program and the News2You Curriculum. In her classroom, they use both to teach the Applied High School courses needed for the Certificate of Attendance.

ULS is highly interactive and is written with activities that use a Promethean board. Students are supposed to get up and go to the board to use the touch screen to select answers. For students who are non-verbal or who have limited communication skills, this is a great accommodation for allowing them an alternate mode of indicating their responses. Jessica has two students in particular that have really been able to more fully participate in class using the board. She has also been able to better assess their understanding of the curriculum. Both students have surprised Jessica with their accuracy and just how much they really understand the classwork.

In the past she has used the IPEVO pen to allow students to choose their answers on the large screen. However, for students who have fine motor difficulties, the pen is cumbersome. Using the board allows them the choice to just use their finger or use a pen. It gives her student with visual impairment a bigger screen/visuals. It gets the students moving, which Jessica feels also aids the thinking process.

Jessica is seeing amazing progress with her students and making sure she is reaching every student on their level using a smartboard. She continues to seek out methods of alternative response so all of her students can fully engage in their learning.
